Black Soldier Fly
About The Black Soldier Fly
The Black Soldier Fly, Hermetia illuscens, is a native species in the United States that has shown great promise as a resource for environmental sustainability and waste stream reduction. These flies are used in wide-array of applications from small and large scale composting to animal protein feed. Homeowners and municipalities alike have begun to remove organic waste from the landfill stream and instead are generating compost bins. When early stage (instar) larvae are added to this compost pile, the flies begin to do their job of consuming and constantly rotating the compost contents. On average, 1 thousand larvae can transform 1 kilogram of organic waste into a nutrient rich compost “soil”. This composted by-product can be utilized as a soil enhancer for home gardens or plant beds creating a beneficial outlet for what would typically end up in a landfill.
